Discover Castle Hill

The iconic Schloβberg (Castle Hill) dominates the Graz cityscape. Legend has it that this hill was formed by a pact with the devil, for whom the transaction did not go exactly as planned. But this elevation at the heart of Graz has a wealth of tales to tell, both in the mythical and the real world. The castle that gave the city its name was built in 1125. The fortress that succeeded it was so strong that it even withstood Napoleon’s advances. Today barely any traces of the castle remain, as the people of Graz were forced to demolish it after Napoleon claimed victory over the Habsburgs. All that remains today are the Clock Tower and the Bell Tower. The complex also boasts a fascinating system of tunnels, excavated in World War II deep inside the rock.

Explore the beautiful area around Castle Hill with your conference or meeting attendees and delve into the city’s rich history. The views alone make this outing to the top of the city’s hill worthwhile. This is a place where you can soak up the sweeping views and let your mind wander.
